American and Tennessee History (Beginnings to Reconstruction)

My name is Mary Brockett and this is my thirty-third year

teaching, four of which have been in Knox County at Vine. I received my

BS and Masters degree from Tennessee Tech (Cookeville, TN).

Course Description:

Eighth Grade Social Studies will emphasize the

history of the United States and Tennessee from discovery through the

Civil War.

Goals:

Students will be able to build on information helping them become productive citizens in society. They will be able to understand the major events leading up and including the Civil War. Students will also increase their critical thinking skills and become better readers.

Grading:

Students will receive grades as follows:

Each assignment will be worth a certain number of possible points. The more important the assignment, the more points are possible (example: a test will count more than homework). The grade will be determined by dividing the points earned by the possible points. This will give a percentage that can be turned into a letter grade.

  A progress report

will be sent half way through the nine weeks. Knox County Grading Scale

- A =93-100; B=85-92; C=75-84; D=74-70; U/F=69 and below.

Absences:

Homework is due on time. Students will be allowed to make up work for excused absences. It is the student's responsibility to make arrangements with the teacher for missed work. This should be done on the day the student returns to school.

Classroom Guidelines:

 1. Students will bring all materials to class.

 2. Students will turn in all work when it is due.

 3. Students will show respect to all students and teachers.
